3 Common Culprits Homeowners Can Check Immediately

  1. The Remote/Thermostat Setting: Ensure the unit is set to the snowflake icon ("COOL") rather than the droplet ("DRY") or fan blades ("FAN"). Set the target temperature at least 3°C lower than the current room temperature to call for compressor activation.

  2. The Breaker Panel: Air conditioners operate on dual circuits—one for the indoor blower and one for the outdoor compressor. If the outdoor circuit breaker trips due to a temporary power spike, the indoor unit will continue blowing room-temperature air. Check your main electrical panel and reset the exterior AC breaker once. If it trips a second time, leave it off to prevent wiring damage.

  3. The Outdoor Isolator Switch: Ensure the exterior rotary safety switch located near the outdoor condenser unit hasn't been switched off accidentally during cleaning or rooftop maintenance.

When to Shut the Unit Down and Call a Technician

If the outdoor fan runs but the air remains warm, or you hear a repetitive clicking/humming sound every few minutes, the compressor is likely failing to start or shutting off on thermal overload. Continuing to run the system in this state can permanently seize the motor.
